Position Summary

The Grounds Person is responsible for maintaining the overall appearance, safety, and cleanliness of the campus grounds at Long Island University. This role ensures outdoor areas are well-kept, functional, and aesthetically pleasing for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain lawns, trees, shrubs, flower beds, and landscaped areas
  • Perform mowing, edging, trimming, and pruning
  • Plant, water, fertilize, and care for greenery and seasonal plants
  • Remove leaves, debris, litter, and snow from walkways and grounds
  • Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment (mowers, trimmers, blowers, etc.)
  • Assist with irrigation system maintenance and repairs
  • Apply pesticides and fertilizers in accordance with safety regulations
  • Maintain outdoor facilities including sidewalks, parking areas, and athletic fields
  • Support campus events by setting up and breaking down outdoor spaces
  • Identify and report hazards, damages, or maintenance needs

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Prior experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or facilities maintenance is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of horticulture and plant care
  • Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment safely
  • Valid driver’s license (may be required)
