The Assistant Grounds & Custodial Manager supports the daily operations and maintenance of all outdoor facilities, landscaping, grounds areas, and custodial services. This role works closely with the Grounds Manager to ensure high-quality, safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing indoor and outdoor environments for the organization. The position includes supervisory responsibilities and hands-on work, helping lead groundskeeping and custodial staff, coordinating schedules, and ensuring equipment and supplies are properly maintained.
Key Responsibilities
Grounds Maintenance
- Assist in the planning, scheduling, and supervision of daily groundskeeping operations.
- Oversee mowing, trimming, planting, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, and seasonal landscaping.
- Monitor and maintain athletic fields, parks, gardens, walkways, parking lots, and other outdoor areas.
- Ensure proper use, maintenance, and storage of tools, vehicles, and machinery.
- Coordinate with external vendors for specialized landscaping or grounds services as needed.
- Support event setups and breakdowns that require outdoor space preparation.
- Help manage inventory of groundskeeping supplies and submit purchase requests.
- Assist with snow removal, leaf collection, and other seasonal duties.
Custodial & Facility Maintenance
- Assist in the supervision and coordination of custodial staff and daily cleaning operations.
- Ensure facilities are maintained in a clean, safe, and professional condition.
- Perform and oversee floor maintenance activities including stripping, waxing, buffing, burnishing, and refinishing of hard surface floors.
- Monitor and maintain carpets, tile, vinyl, and other flooring surfaces.
- Inspect facilities regularly to ensure custodial standards are met.
- Maintain custodial equipment and ensure proper use of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
- Assist with room setups, event support, and facility preparation for organizational functions.
- Ensure compliance with sanitation, safety, and OSHA standards.
Leadership & Administration
- Supervise and train grounds and custodial staff; provide performance feedback and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
- Assist with scheduling and daily work assignments.
- Help manage inventory of groundskeeping and custodial supplies.
- Maintain records related to maintenance activities, equipment inspections, and supply usage.
- Serve as acting manager in the absence of the Grounds Manager.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree or coursework in horticulture, turf management, facilities management, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, turf management, custodial services, or facilities maintenance.
- Minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in commercial floor care, including stripping, waxing, buffing, and refinishing floors.
- Knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment, custodial equipment, and industry best practices.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to operate landscaping and groundskeeping machinery (mowers, tractors, blowers, etc.).
- Working knowledge of irrigation systems, turf care, basic horticulture, and custodial cleaning procedures.
- Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in various weather and facility conditions.
Work Conditions
- Combination of indoor and outdoor work with exposure to varying weather conditions.
- May require weekend, evening, or holiday hours depending on season, facility needs, or events.
- May involve the use of chemicals, including fertilizers, pesticides, cleaning solutions, floor finishes, and stripping agents, with appropriate PPE.
- Frequent standing, walking, lifting, bending, and operation of maintenance equipment.
